Luke Donald has named a strong cast for the inaugural Hero Cup, with Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry committed to playing in January’s Ryder Cup warm-up.
Although none of the top four Europeans – Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland – are currently included for the clash between Continental Europe and Britain and Ireland in Abu Dhabi, there is considerable depth in what amounts to a try at the Ryder Cup.
The British and Irish team of 10, led by Tommy Fleetwood, includes Lowry, Hatton, Ewen Ferguson, Robert MacIntyre, Callum Shinkwin, Jordan Smith, Matt Wallace and Seamus Power, who recently won the PGA Tour.

Like Francesco Molinari’s European side, they will announce their final player at the end of the year.
The Continental European line-up includes Alex Noren, Thomas Pieters, Sepp Straka, Rasmus Højgaard, Victor Perez, Adrian Meronk, Thomas Detry and Guido Migliozzi.
With a number of 18 players in early contention to make the European squad for Rome next Autumn, Donald said: ‘We all thought it was important to combine experience and youth and I think we found that balance. in a mix of major champions and Ryder Cup players, with men hoping to secure a place in Rome next year.’
