Argentina speedster Mateo Carreras has delivered three major blows to Richard Wigglesworth’s hopes of replacing Steve Borthwick as Leicester boss.

The Argentinian made the Tigers look like pussycats with a first-half hat-trick at Kingston Park.

It was a second damaging defeat following a 40-5 thrashing of Sale Sharks for Wigglesworth since taking over as interim boss when Borthwick moved to England.

Wigglesworth said: ‘I don’t think anyone saw the last two weeks coming. The first half hour killed us. We didn’t get a lot right in terms of discipline and were under a lot of pressure.’

Carreras added: ‘I love playing here. The fans have been incredible since I arrived at Newcastle with their support. We are moving in the right direction.’

Leicester face Clermont Auvergne in their next game as they look to bounce back from this defeat.
