Phil Mickelson has once again courted controversy, leaving the course at the PGA Championship to offer some very strong opinions on the LIV-PGA case.

Mickelson is one of the most high-profile players to swap the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed LIV series, pocketing himself a reported $200m in the process.

He’s never far from the spotlight when it comes to criticizing his former bosses, and that was the case again at Oak Hill on Sunday night.

After completing his final round at the PGA Championship, and earning a 10-over-par 58th-placed finish, he was asked why he kept hitting out on his old tour.

‘I guess it’s because I know some things that others don’t know,’ he told reporters. ‘I just want to make sure everyone is held accountable.’

Then he added: ‘I know a lot of things that will come out later.’

Earlier in the week, the leftie confirmed a New York Times report that he had recently met with DOJ investigators. It was also reported that Bryson Dechambeau and Sergio Garcia – another two LIV defectors – did the same.

In 2022, the federal government opened an inquiry into alleged antitrust practices by the PGA Tour, and is reportedly exploring the tour’s relationship with The Masters, the Official World Golf Rankings, the PGA of America, the R&A, and the USGA.

Furthermore, Mickelson was asked by reporters what he felt was LIV’s biggest achievement so far.

Pulling no punches, the 52-year-old, six-time major winner said: ‘It’s given 48 new professional golf opportunities at the highest pay, which is incredible.’

He then added: ‘It’s … getting a lot of younger fans out and introducing a whole different vibe to the game of golf that I think is needed.

‘We’re only a year (in) and I’m thinking, three to five years out, where are we. But we’ve only been together for a year so I’m just getting started.

‘In two years, that’s when we have to look back and say, “Okay, where do we want to be?” And it looks like we’re on the right track.’

Mickelson’s fellow LIV defector Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship at Oak Hill on Sunday, sealing himself a $3.15m prize pot and a fifth major.
