Shaun Wright-Phillips parades the Premier League trophy in front of his father Ian Wright, as the heartbroken Arsenal legend jokes ‘it’s not funny’… after the Gunners beat Nottingham Forest to hand Man City the title

Shaun Wright-Phillips couldn’t resist getting back at his father Ian Wright by displaying the Premier League trophy in front of him after Arsenal’s title challenge once and for all on Saturday night.

Having led the league for 248 days this season, Arsenal slipped to their third defeat in five games as they lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest to hand Manchester City their third straight title.

Arsenal legend Wright has supported his former club throughout the season, but in the end it was Pep Guardiola’s men who came out on top, and Wright-Phillips, who played 273 games for City over two spells, swept salt in the wounds shortly after the full-time whistle in Nottingham.

Optus Sport ended their coverage with Wright-Phillips walking into the studio with the Premier League trophy covered in light blue ribbons to represent City’s colours.

The ex-City winger burst into laughter as he placed the trophy right next to his father, who started to smile but said ‘It’s not funny!’

The trophy is within touching distance of Wright, and the popular pundit joked it was ‘too close’ having watched his side lead for most of the season only to be shocked at the final hurdle.

He even joked about ‘talking’ to the production team following his son’s stunt, but finished by admitting City were deserved winners while also praising Arsenal’s efforts throughout the campaign.

‘My club has given me so much love and joy this season, I’m trying to do it. But again, we’re up against a monster in City and they deserved the way they ended the season.’

After an incredible first half of the season, City have been dominant in recent months, winning 11 straight league games to see off Arsenal.

Following the Gunners’ defeat on Saturday, City now have a four-point lead and two games in hand on Mikel Arteta’s side.

They will have the chance to lift the trophy for real on this day following their final home game of the season against Chelsea, where the Blues are also set to present them with a guard of honor before kick-off.

With their first trophy wrapped up, City have two more to play for in the coming weeks as they try to win the Treble.

They face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on June 3, before facing Inter Milan in the Champions League final next week.
