That’s why the USA needs him! Folarin Balogun scored his 20th goal of the season days after being cleared to play for the USMNT in a huge victory for US soccer
Folarin Balogun showed why the United States is so excited about his international move by firing home his 20th goal of the season for French team Reims on Sunday.
The 21-year-old drilled a low shot past Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana in the 55th minute of their French league game on Sunday for his landmark goal after Angers failed to clear the pass in the penalty area.
The goal capped a significant week for Balogun after he was cleared by FIFA to represent the United States at the international level. The striker was born in Brooklyn and grew up in London to Nigerian parents.
The move is also a big boost for the US team as its striking options are widely considered limited compared to the talent on the team as a whole.
Balogun will lead the USA attack this summer and lead the team in attack for next year’s Copa America and the 2026 World Cup, which the USA will co-host with Mexico and Canada.
‘My decision to represent the United States was with my family,’ said Balogun, who now has 20 goals in 35 games for France. ‘In the end it became a no-brainer, but for sure it’s just something I wanted to do and it feels like I’m at home here.
‘It means a lot to represent the United States, more than people know. I am very proud and honored to have this opportunity, and I want to give everything I have to make our team successful.’
