Tiger Woods will work with a new business partner and world No. 1 Rory McIlroy to face close friends Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas at The Match in Florida next month

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will take on Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the latest edition of ‘The Match’ in December, according to reports.

The four golfing superstars will face off under the lights at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida on December 10 at 7pm, where the match will be 12 holes, according to Golf Digest.

The showdown is the seventh edition of ‘The Match’ and the second this year after NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers defeated Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.

This will be Woods’ third appearance in the series with his first coming in ‘The Match’ debut against rival Phil Mickelson in 2018 when he was beaten by Lefty.

The inaugural event appears to be a contributing factor to Mickelson’s departure from LIV Golf after he claimed the PGA Tour ‘forced him to pay them $1m an hour’ for his own rights to media to play ‘The Match’.

However, Woods got his revenge on the six-time Major winner when he and Peyton Manning defeated Mickelson and Tom Brady in a charity challenge in the early days of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.

McIlroy, Spieth and Thomas will participate in the event for the first time but the latter commented on the 2020 clash between Woods and Mickelson among the NFL greats.

McIlroy, Woods and Thomas were part of a similar exhibition in September 2020, along with Englishman Justin Rose, to showcase Payne’s Valley Golf Club, the first public-access golf course designed by Woods’ TGR Design firm, as well as raising money for the Payne Family Foundation.

Woods has made three official appearances this season as he returned to the Masters in April for the first time since his horror car accident in February 2021, which left him with the possibility of having his leg amputated.

The 15-time Major winner also made the cut at the PGA Championship but was forced to withdraw due to illness, while he may bid farewell to the Old Course at St Andrews at the 150th Open in July.

He has a solid partner in McIlroy who has climbed the ranks to regain World No. 1 spot with three wins last season and the FedEx Cup win.

But Spieth and Thomas will provide stiff competition. The duo has a 4-2 record in the Ryder Cup and played together for the first time in the Presidents Cup winning all four matches in which they were paired.

Thomas also won the PGA Championship for the second time in his career with a playoff triumph at Southern Hills, while Spieth enjoyed a renaissance this season winning the RBC Heritage and amassing a 5-0-0 record at Quail Hollow.

Woods and McIlroy recently teamed up to launch their TMRW Sports venture and the TGL – a tech-infused golf league.

The pair unveiled a star-studded lineup of investors on Wednesday, including Steph Curry, Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams.

Meanwhile, Spieth and Thomas’ friendship is well documented with the two having known each other since they were 14 years old.

The last edition of The Match that featured professional golfers was in November 2021 between bitter rivals Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.

The two have had a notoriously frosty relationship and have regularly fired shots at each other on the PGA Tour and Koepka took the bragging rights with a dominant 4&3 victory. However, they both turned to Saudi-backed LIV Golf.
