North Melbourne footballer Tarryn Thomas plans to fight a criminal charge of threatening to distribute an intimate image.

The 23-year-old appeared at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning after he was charged with the offense in January.

Thomas remained silent as his attorney applied to adjourn the case to a contest citation hearing.

Magistrate Abigail Burchill granted the request, with the case to return to Broadmeadows court on July 18.

The judge denied media access to court documents, saying there was the potential for Thomas to plead not guilty to the charge.

Ms Burchill told the court that the information would be false or inaccurately described if it were to be released to journalists and that Thomas was entitled to a presumption of innocence.

The North Melbourne footballer made no comment as he left the court.

Thomas spent time at the AFL club after the allegations surfaced.

North Melbourne is investigating the circumstances surrounding reports of new allegations that Thomas engaged in inappropriate behavior with women.

The latest report comes after multiple women detailed allegations of inappropriate behavior by Thomas, including threats of violence, to the AFL Integrity Unit earlier this year.

Those allegations led to Thomas’ temporary departure from North Melbourne at the end of January.

He was allowed to return to the club for training last month on the condition he take part in a respect and responsibility education program before returning to AFL action.

The 23-year-old, who played just 10 AFL games last season, is not allowed to attend the club and is not available for selection at a senior or VFL level.

He has played 57 games for the Roos since being selected at pick eight in the 2018 national draft.
