Pep Guardiola has joked how his golden touch has translated to the small screen – after his cameo in hit US TV show Ted Lasso.

The treble-chasing Manchester City boss appears in the latest episode of the award-winning series which portrays an American football coach, played by Jason Sudeikis, who moves to manage in the Premier League.

But, although Guardiola suggested that he was hired for his on-screen role to boost the popularity of the show, the real reason is more than a family relationship.

‘Ted Lasso needed people like me to make the show better for them to have success,’ joked the City manager.

‘But as a family, we’re big, big fans. My little daughter Valentina and my husband and I enjoy watching the show, especially the first season.

‘And when they came and offered me to do a cameo, I said why not. I could meet the actors and, after a game here at the Etihad, they came and we spoke again. Nice.’

City’s fixation on the Apple TV show saw the latest episode built around Lasso’s AFC Richmond visiting the Etihad to take on Guardiola’s City in a potential title decider.

The episode will offer City massive exposure around the world and, says Guardiola, is a sign of the big strides the club is making, both on and off the field.

‘Of course, we are so proud, honestly,’ he said.

‘To do this and for the whole world to know who Man City is. These are the small steps that show how the club has worked in the past.’
