Pep Guardiola will hand Man City two days off ahead of treble tilt

Pep Guardiola will give Man City two days off after their Premier League finale at Brentford to ‘disconnect’ ahead of their ‘once in a lifetime’ bid for the treble – with the FA Cup and Champions League finals just around the corner

  • Manchester City travel to Brentford after sealing their Premier League title
  • Pep Guardiola will then give his squad two days to rest with their families
  • Then, his players will focus on winning the treble and securing immortality

Pep Guardiola will give his champions a fortnight after Sunday’s visit to Brentford before telling them to focus on a ‘once in a lifetime’ chance of footballing immortality.

The end of another successful league campaign will be followed by FA Cup and Champions League finals that could propel City to just the second treble in football history.

But he ordered his entire staff to ‘disconnect’ for two days at the end of the league campaign to recharge their batteries for one last push.

‘If we played one game a week for the last month, maybe I wouldn’t give the players two days off but at that moment we have to disconnect,’ he said.

‘Even our physios and doctors and chefs, they are working hard at the moment. They don’t have time off. They need to be disconnected.

‘They are here working 10 hours to prepare the players to help them recover, and help them get through this tough season.

‘So, go with your families, if the sun is shining, play golf, do whatever you want and go quality to prepare for the finals. You have to practice a little but exactly what we need to get to the best conditions for the final, they know.

‘Everyone knows what position we are in. It comes once in a lifetime, twice in a lifetime?

‘Being Premier League champions with three games to go and playing in two finals – that doesn’t come every season. Once we are there, first of all you need to relax and enjoy and do your best. No one can be sure that we will ever be in that position again.’

Guardiola will take his own advice, and rest with his family after the visit to Brentford but admits he won’t be able to hit the golf course as he recommended to his players.

‘No, my back doesn’t allow me,’ said Guardiola. ‘But in my experience the best way to play important finals is to disconnect as much as possible.

‘Before when I started, it was “I have prepared the final. I have to make a lot of videos.” Now it is completely the opposite.

‘I’m going to my family. I don’t forget about football but until I am with the players in it I am not connected. The players always ask you to be ready, so… family time, great restaurants.’
