The US completed a perfect group stage at the Under-20 World Cup and will join second-placed Ecuador in the tournament’s knockout stage after both teams won on Friday.

The Group B-leading Americans defeated Slovakia 2-0 at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario in San Juan, Argentina. Second-placed Ecuador hammered Fiji 9-0 in Santiago del Estero.

The US had already secured a spot in the knockout stage but finished the group stage with three wins from three games, and no goals conceded. They are the only team left in the competition with three clean sheets in as many games played.

Cade Cowell scored before halftime from a counterattack, and Niko Tsakiris added their second in injury time.

Both players are members of the San Jose Earthquakes, of the MLS, and are highly rated by the US Soccer Federation. Cowell made his debut for the USMNT senior squad as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2021.
