‘We’ve had some great trips with the supporters’: West Ham travel to Gent in Europa Conference League quarter finals… as David Moyes’ men look back on 1964/65 European Cup Winners’ Cup memories Hammers run

  • West Ham won before Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Co lifted the trophy
  • Moyes hopes that is a good sign as they aim to reach this year’s final in Prague
  • Should West Ham beat Gent they will face Anderlecht or AZ Alkmaar in the semis

The road to Prague was presented to West Ham as David Moyes’ men were held to a favorable draw with Belgian side Gent in the quarter finals of the Europa Conference League.

For older fans, it brought back memories of the Hammers’ 1964/65 European Cup Winners’ Cup run which began with a two-legged tie against Gent.

The English side won 2-1 before Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Co lifted the trophy.

Moyes hopes that is a good sign as they aim to reach this year’s final in the Czech capital.

Should West Ham beat Gent, who sit fifth in the Belgian First Division, they will face either Anderlecht or AZ Alkmaar in the semi finals.

‘You can’t say that in football,’ said Moyes when asked about being the bookies’ favourite.

‘I would never be presumptuous to think that is the case because we need to improve. I need to bring us closer to our levels.’

West Ham, winners of all 10 of their European games this season, travel to Gent on Thursday April 13 before facing the all-important second leg at home next week.

‘We’ve had two quarter finals in the last two years in Europe,’ added Moyes.

‘We’ve had some great trips with the supporters. We played in some brilliant stadiums. It has been great for the club. We really enjoyed it.’
